New Releases: Angel - Angel (50th Anniversary) (2025)

50 years ago today, Angel released their debut album on Casablanca Records.

I remember discovering Angel in 2012 after my dad asked me if I ever listened to them. The first album I listened to was actually "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" and I loved it and I wanted to check out the rest of their catalog.

In my discovery time of listening to each Angel release for the first time, listening to the first album was something I did a few times and it taught me what great debut albums are. To me, great debut albums are where you get to see a band show you a little bit of everything. A slow song and a fast song, not a band only doing one type of song. It shows the listener what this artist is capable of and some listeners would feel that an album doesn't flow when it's like this, but I love when every song is different from the one that precedes it because it's interesting for the listener and makes them wonder what the band will do next.

Angel was formed in Washington, D.C., and their first album was recorded for Casablanca Records, whose clientele included Kiss, Parliament, and Donna Summer.

The lineup that recorded this album was Frank DiMino on vocals, Punky Meadows on guitar, Gregg Giuffria on keyboards, Mickie Jones on bass, and Barry Brandt on drums.

Now to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, the album has been remastered and is being released on both a 6-panel
CD digipak and on 180 gram vinyl in two limited edition colors with liner notes by Rock Candy journalist Dave Reynolds.

The blue/white edition of the vinyl is sold out, but the blue/black version is still available as well as the CD version!

One of my all time favorite bands, since 1984! I remember seeing them in 16 Magazine as a little kid in the 70’s and didn’t know who they were, I thought they looked like girls trying to be Kiss! I didn’t hear them until 1984 when I found their third album in a library and checked it out on the strength of being on Casablanca Records and being produced by Eddie Kramer alone! I figured the had to at least be a little like KISS, little did I know they were so much more than that, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since!
