Today marks the release of the third album from the The Claypool Lennon Delirum, a group where the worlds of Les Claypool and Sean Ono Lennon collide to create progadelic music which is music that is both progressive and psychedelic.
I've been looking forward to hearing the latest chapter of The Claypool Lennon Delirium story. I remember discovering them when they made the cover of Magnet Magazine in May 2016 ahead of the release for "Monolith Of Phobos". I was so excited to see that Les and Sean were creating music together. The catalog so far is 2016's "Monolith Of Phobos", 2017's "Lime and Limpid Green", 2019's "South of Reality" and their latest album which was released digitally today, "The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy". It will be released physically on May 8th.
"The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy" tells a tale of Cliptopia, a land that was once glorious and a sentient Artficiail Intelligence known as Cliptron is resourcing everything from buildings to bicycles to cars to cardboard and these things are being turned into paper clips-
A young artist named Hippard O. Campus Jr. rebels against his father Hippard O. Campus Sr. who is the owner of Clipnex Corporation and the creator of Cliptron. With the help of salty sea-dog Colonel O’Coren, Hipp embarks on a fantastical adventure to save the world from the ever-growing threat of Cliptron's resource-stealing robots.
Hipp's quest leads them across the sea to the Isle of Lucidity where they meet the all-wise Ministry of Manatees. The Manatees guide them to the “Great Parrot Ox,” whose Golden Egg of Empathy is the only thing that can bring understanding and emotion to Cliptron and stop it from wreaking further havoc on the world. Rushing back to Cliptopia, they find the robots are out of control, rounding up everything—humans included—to create even more Clipnex brand paperclips. Will the Golden Egg of Empathy be enough to change Cliptron's cold, chrome heart?
The Great Parrot Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy is a cautionary tale (told with both song and cutting edge illustration) of a dystopian future where production and industry challenge morality and sustainability.
Based on the "Paperclip Theory,” a renowned thought experiment about artificial intelligence safety which proposes that an advanced Artificial Intelligence with the seemingly benign goal of making as many paperclips as possible could inadvertently cause the end of humanity.
With this latest release, The Claypool Lennon Delirium poses the question: In the face of extreme, rampant, single-minded efficiency, can human
values and empathy save the day?
When you order a copy of "The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy", you will get to experience not only an album, but you'll get to read a 24 page comic packed with color and incredible illustrations by Rich Ragsdale.
The packaging on this album is an incredible example of how amazingly a record can be packaged. It's one effort bringing us back to the experience of listening to a record and examining the album jacket and a cool insert which in this case is a 24-page comic and an album package I cannot wait to crack open and experience while listening to the very latest sounds by The Claypool Lennon Delirium.
