Single Bullet Theory was formed in 1976 by three members from bands who were part of the early 1970s Richmond music scene.

Frank Daniel, Dennis Madigan, and Michael Maurice Garrett as well as their soundman Z had been together since 1971. They were part of the bands Big Naptar who was an experimental art rock group which became Crossbreed and eventually X-Breed who gained a larger following. They were known for playing eclectic covers and original garage punk songs.

When they became Single Bullet Theory, they refined the sound of these earlier bands while retaining the loose, high energy and high volume which they achieved by using three guitars.

Their catalog includes a 12" self-titled EP that was released in 1977 on Artifacts Records, a 45 of Peggy Got Her Eyes Full/There Is The Boy released in Artifacts Records in 1981, a self-titled album released on Nemperor Records in 1982, a 45 of Keep It Tight in 1982 on Nemperor Records, a 45 of Hang On To Your Heart in 1983 on Nemperor Records, and an EP of unreleased songs called C. 79 that was released in 2023 on Feel It Records.
