1: How did you decide on the name, “Cold Shoulder"?
Great question haha we went through that same process every band seemingly goes through where you come up with a bunch of names and then look it up and it turns out there's seven band that same name. We wanted to come up with something that sounded rock and roll while not shying away from our goofy, something fun. at cold shoulder seems to encapsulate that. We like to refer to ourselves internally as Hot Elbow.
2: What inspires you to create?
We got tired of playing cover gigs, haha no, we create because we love content. We know what it feels like to stumble on great music and we hope to give that same feeling to others. And hopefully see them at the show
3: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be in a creative profession?
Never stop picking up skills, so many people get complacent with their current skill set. Everyone has to realize that most likely, you aren't Mozart or Eddie Van Halen. But you can always add tools into the tool belt to sharpen your craft, even if they don't immediately seem related, it's one more tool to use.
4: Do you feel open minded about what you listen to? Do you like going out of your comfort zone?
We as a band are all over the place are influences go from Alice in Chains, Guns N Roses, Weezer, Nirvana and the like. But you will also hear us listening to pop music. Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, tears for fears, Kanye west. And maybe most infamously... Nickelback. But there's so much genius stuff happening in genres other than rock and we like to find spots to learn from them.
5: What outlets do you find out about music from? (Record stores, magazines, samplers, etc.)
Places like reddit and other forums almost act like a digital record store today. Instagram is also a spot to connect with bands and musicians you otherwise might not have seen.
6: What is your favorite format to listen to music on? (CD, Vinyl, etc.)
The internet is a wonderful tool. Spotify, tidal, and other streaming platforms play a big role in music today. That being said, CD and Vinyl always holds a special place.
7: What band/artist do you think everyone should listen to?
Nickelback really is criminally underrated (by music scene folks) . People write them off, but I dare you to listen to the album All The Right Reasons and not find 4-6 songs that you can't help but love. There's a reason they are so popular. Bring Me the Horizon's most recent album was phenomenal. Machine Gun Kelly recently did a pop punk inspired album that felt like such a breath of fresh air to mainstream radio music. If none of those are your style, there's always Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction.
8: What motivates you to check out a new artist?
Having high quality content. There's so much stuff out there that having a product that is well presented, well put together and to the point seems to be what grabs us.
9: Who was the first band/artist that became your favorite band?
Oooo that's a toughie. Everyone in the band has different firsts. But some that always come up in conversation would be Seether, Breaking Benjamin, The Beach Boys and Kiss.
10: What was the inspiration for your song “Can You?”
Can You is a song that touches on relationship struggles. The music is upbeat and fun but lyrically it goes into the challenge of having someone you love also be the person who can hurt you the most, and visa versa "Can you love me? Can you hate me?" I think everyone has had moments like that whether it be friends, family, or a loved one.
