Retronaut Selects: Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room (1990)

This was an album I always remember my dad talking about, specifically when he was touring with his band, Rockaway.

He always tells the story of hearing the first side of this album before the band went on one night, and it got him all fired up. He recalls that the band played a phenomenal show that night!

I always remember him playing it and I got into it in parts, and as I got a little older, I finally gave it a proper full listen and it is spectacular.

There’s such a rawness on this album, which was unlike the similar style bands of this era. Most music from this time was polished, but Love/Hate never sounded polished and that was why they sounded cool. They captured the raw energy of the band instead of eliminating it to sound more commercial.

There’s a live EP that came with an issue of Kerrang! which you’ve gotta hear.

The songs translate insanely well in a live environment. Like, astoundingly well.

I got really into this album towards the end of high school, and it’s one of my absolute favorites. Every song is like a little chapter and it all connects to make the fantastically fantastic album that is Blackout In The Red Room.

Essential Tracks: She’s An Angel, Fuel To Run, One More Round
