1: How did you decide on the name, “Blacktop Mojo”?
Matt: I was backroading with some friends and needed something to stir my drink. My friend handed me a piece of a mojo brand Duck decoy called a Mojo Key to get the job done and the rest is a bit hazy. When we got back we had the name Blacktop Mojo.
2: What inspires you to create?
Matt: There’s nothing quite like the feeling of feeling inspiration for a song and then being able to step back once you’ve finished it.
3: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be in a creative profession?
Matt: practice what you do all the time and never quit.
4: Do you feel open minded about what you listen to? Do you like going out of your comfort zone?
Matt: I’m very open in what I listen to. I’ll jam anything from Pantera, to J. Cole to Django Reinhardt.
5: What outlets do you find out about music from? (Record stores, magazines, samplers, etc.)
Matt: I usually find out about new music from friends, social media or just scrolling through Spotify
6: How do you think the internet has impacted the music business?
Matt: It has turned the whole thing on its head. It has also allowed a lot of people that may never have gotten a shot to do big things!!
7: Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
Matt: I like to work out, play video games, play fantasy sports, go hiking, among other things
8: What motivates you to check out a new artist?
Matt: Usually hearing someone talk about them, seeing cool stuff on social media, hearing a song in a movie or on TV and looking up who it is.
9: Who was the first band/artist that became your favorite band?
Matt: Probably Linkin Park when I was about nine years old! Hybrid Theory was the first album I bought with my own money!
10: What was the inspiration for your song “Rewind”?
Matt: Rewind is about that bittersweet moment when you love someone, but you know that it’s over and wishing you could go back and revisit all those good moments one last time.
